People, who were in the School of Communication Science “Alfredo Piñeyro” Auditorium, were touched by memories and nostalgia of that September 2nd, 1974.

This moment was perfect for listening UANL School of Journalism founders, who returned to their Alma Mater in order to remember and share with the audience.

Anecdotes related to the School of Communication Science creation and its opening on August, 1974 were remembered through the panel called “The School of Journalism as the Origin of the School of Communication Science.”

Among the guests of that event were: Jose de la Luz Lozano as event’s moderator, who is a first generation ex student and a journalist with a long experience in mass media; Samuel Flores Longoria, School of Journalism first coordinator, as well as professors such as Emma Verastegui, Roberto Mendichaga, Alvaro Benito Pareja and Abraham Nuncio Limon.

After a brief talk about panel members’ life as an introduction, the talk –which had a length of more than two hours- started, plans, advices and explanation about how the idea of having a school of journalism inside the UANL came up.

At the beginning of a project we all have to deal with lacks and inconveniences, and so did the School of Journalism, because it did not have qualified people for it and professors had a long experience in Literature, while Journalism was being created with students. So, that is how teaching turned into students’ vocation, and there were students who were already working in mass media.

We have to mention that this school was born in the School of Law and Social Sciences –that used to be its name- and it was headed by Lic. Neftali Garza Contreras, who always supported the idea of having a school focused on journalism.

“I feel very proud because, after 35 years, you realize that the school and these facilities are big because there are great people, and above all, because University’s effort –thinking of essential resources for education- is appreciated, in spite of currently, we all are having a very difficult moment,” said professor Alvaro Pareja.

All important people who were there agreed that the greatest achievement of this school is educating qualified journalists, who are committed to their work and society. Furthermore, professors carried out a meticulous analysis about journalistic teaching’s past and present as well as students’ objectives research for making Journalism their true vocation.

“Nowadays, we know students who want to change their country. We need people who feel that, and through my life, in Letters and Journalism teaching, it has been one of the greatest satisfactions, because students are always trying to transcend,” said one of the most important founders, Roberto Mendichaga.

Finally, guests invited students to keep with their profession, always thinking of the competitiveness in the work world, and the idea of becoming Journalism a true vocation and passion in all life’s aspects.
