A Vanguard Service: General Directorate of UANL Libraries

An excellent, technological and academic service for student which allows being at the same level of global expectations of these days.

Our Leading Academic Institution’s schools such as General Directorate of Libraries (DGB, Spanish acronym) have been working through a development plan which includes a powerful project. Nowadays, their achievements are visible as a result of a complete team’s courage and hard work.

Since 2004, DGB has developed work programs that allow fulfilling some implemented rules in its development areas. Since five years ago, DGB insists to detect ways of improvement in some school’s libraries of UANL.

“We have gotten an amazing advance because in 2003, before operation’s beginning, there were 74 libraries. So, in 2008, UANL has 85 libraries divided in five subsystems: Subsystem of Central Libraries formed of five libraries, Subsystem of Research Libraries which has ten libraries, Subsystem of Postgraduate Libraries; there are seven, Subsystem of Undergraduate Libraries which has 26 and Subsystem of Higher Education with 36 libraries,” said Doctor Porfirio Tamez Solis, who is General Director of our University libraries.

We have to mention “we got these results because of a program which pretended to unify all libraries, this program is called Integrated Library System of Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo Leon (SIBUANL, Spanish acronym) and it was the first time we could know general data, book collection numbers, selection and acquisition processes of material and other things,” said Tamez Solis.

DGB also is progressing with other programs focused on libraries automation which is divided in three subprograms:

Equipment. In 2008, all schools of UANL got computers equipment.

Connectivity. In 2003, only 22 libraries had this course, in 2008, 79 libraries were favored with Internet service.

Software. A group action that has been developed in a computer system called CODICE, made with General Directorate of Computing (DGI, Spanish acronym) and DGB.

To Digital Vanguard

Doctor Tamez Solis is proud of the service provided by UANL libraries to students, because it has a “vanguard service” such as Digital Library UANL program service which allows having access to more than 10147 online books, a bigger quantity compared to World Digital Library, which was a project of United States of America Congress and UNESCO. In this moment, UANL has a bigger number of online files than World Digital Library, but not all UANL’s files are old, beside; it has all undergraduates’, postgraduates’ thesis and all University’s books.”

DGB has received national and international acknowledgements, because digital Library is a friendly and flexible platform. Finally, Libraries’ Director, mentioned the importance of collection’s development to students’ doubts, because books collection is duplicated from 1 400 000 in 2003 to 2 240 000 in 2008, where there are files, articles electronic books and magazines.
