A group of twelve Nuevo Leon model people received the 2008 edition “Presea Estado de Nuevo Leon” Civic Merit Medal, for their outstanding trajectory for the benefit of the community. Among them, the researcher Alma Yolanda Arce Mendoza, the archer Mariana Avitia, the businessman Jose Maria Garza Ponce, and the judge Maria Teresa Herrera Tello.

A group of twelve Nuevo Leon model people received the 2008 edition “Presea Estado de Nuevo Leon” Civic Merit Medal, for their outstanding trajectory for the benefit of the community.
At the ceremony held at the “Teatro de la Ciudad” on June 10th, the governor Natividad Gonzalez Paras gave the medals to the outstanding personalities for their actions on public, private, social cultural, professional, and sports activities.
Under the Scientific Research caption, Doctor Alma Yolanda Arce Mendoza — professor of the Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo Leon’s School of Medicine — was acknowledged.
Beside graduating from the aforementioned University as a Laboratorist specialized in clinical biology, she was the first woman that obtained a Doctor’s Degree in Sciences with emphasis on immunology in 1989.
Mariana Avitia Martinez, a High School Number 3 student, was awarded on the Youth and Sports category for her achievements in the archery discipline which took her to win the eight place in the Beijing Olympiads, being the youngest athlete —14 years old — in the history of the national delegation. Furthermore, she has important participations in different national and international tournaments since she was 7 years old.
In the Entrepreneurial Initiative category, Jose Maria Garza Ponce — who graduated from the School of Civil Engineering on the 1946-1951 generation — was acknowledged for consolidating a solid professional business in benefit of the public and private works: the Construction Company Garza Ponce.
When he was sixteen years old — and he studied at the “Escuela de Bachilleres” — he started to work as a “time keeper” with a Mexican engineer that had graduated from the prestigious West Point, J.F Woodyear. The first six years as his employee and the last seven, as his partner. Beside, he was a Materials Resistance professor at the School his Advisory Council belonged to.
Maria Teresa Herrera Tello — who studied at the School of Law and Social Sciences and graduated with honors after submitting his undergraduate dissertation — received the Justice Administration medal.
She was the first woman that directed — as a Prime Minister —the Nuevo Leon’s Court of Justice. Also, she was the first woman in charge of the Agrarian Reformation Secretariat.
Maria Elena Chapa — School of Philosophy and Language Arts´ graduate student — is the current Institute for the State’s Women director, received the Political Merit award fort her work in benefit of the genre equity.
Felix Cortes Camarillo received an award on the Journalism category; the Universidad de Monterrey President, Francisco Javier Azcunaga Guerra on Education; for Assistance Promotion, Jaime Rodriguez Silva.
In the area of Communication Jorge Gamez Gonzalez; Jose Juan Ramirez on the Peasant Work category; as a Tourism Promoter, Jose Maria Hernandez Martinez, and Ramon Ayala on Musical Activity.
The governor Jose Natividad Gonzalez Paras mentioned that the Civic Merit medal is an acknowledgement from the State — as a representative of the civil society — to those citizens that in different disciplines, occupations, and duties of the collective life have become protagonists of history.
“We must tell them how much we appreciate their work; they are a representative example of virtues that fortunately exist in our society. These examples lighten the worry and uncertainty of observing a world in crisis, full of conflicts, social diseases, anti-values,” he said.
The governor and the medal-winners were taken to “Palacio de Gobierno” for the official picture and unveiled the plaque to commemorate the medal-giving ceremony.
